downtown champaign, teen photography

March 12, 2011

I have been involved with C-U 1:1 Mentoring for the past three years.  It has been a great way to get to know a local teenager.  I was matched with J, and I am so glad for that!  I meet with her first thing every Monday morning and we talk about our weekends, school work, girl drama, goals, and tell funny stories and she lets me in on the latest slang.  She’s even really good at translating weird things my students say.  Like, I was told that someone was going to go smashin’ and I thought they were talking violence.  J filled me in that really, they are just pretty hungry and are going to be smashin’ that pizza later.  Got it.

Yesterday we spent some time looking through the portfolios of well known senior and fashion photographers.  And I learned that J has a great eye for composition.  I’d show her a photo and she would immediately pick out the lines that drew her in or color balance.

After school we went and did some shots of her.  She found some great places and was willing to try anything… except lying on the ground.  She ain’t triflin’  (is that the right word?)

Here are a few of our favorites:

J is what I would call FIERCE. The first photo looks like a young woman ready to take on the world!

I agree with FIERCE… I love that first photo. Her pose is a great combination of confidence and fun!
